Oblivion (2013)
Another great sci-fi movie started this year. Joseph Kosinski succesfully made Oblivion as fabolus as Tron Legacy years ago.
Genre : Science Fiction, Fantasy, Action, Adventure
Running Time : 2 hours 5 minutes
Release Date : 19 April 2013 (Worldwide)
a brief storyline
Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is a repairman left after earth-war-invasion period (60 years ago). Earth has been invaded by some scavangers who destroy the moon and the earth life. Jack and his partner, Vika (Andrea Riseborough) are chosen to make sure some robots (read : drones) and other facilities working properly, while other survivors are on space preparing to leave earth then going to a new home called Titan. Everything is okay until Jack rescues a human survivor from a drowned spacecraft named Julia (Olga Kurylenko) It leads a lot of questions to Jack about what is it all about, his mission, his existence, and his living in thousands feet above the earth.
Jack Harper: "60 years ago, Earth was attacked. We won the war, but they destroyed half the planet. Everyone's been evacuated. Nothing human remains. We're here for drone repair. We're the "mop-up crew".
a fair review
This movie was so much enjoyable than I expected. I thought this movie would be boring, but in fact it wasn't. The visual is sensational and fascinating. All technologies supplies like, bubble ship, flying round-robots, folding bike, guns, hi-tech screens, even Jack & Victoria's house are futuristic. The battle scenes are quite great though to the boys, while Tom Cruise prefect body shape is so attractive to some women. The electronic score by M83 is perfect for Oblivion's soundtrack.
Tom Cruise succesfully brings an iconic character of Jack Harper - a hero and also a great husband to Julia. What I am confused about is the character of Victoria, played by Andrea Riseborough. She's so called 'an effective partner' to Jack, but what does she do? Just a triangle-love woman to Jack or a GPS-tracker? Even if Victoria's character is missed, I think the plot will still the same. Hahaha, just my thinking though. One more, I think Olga Kurylenko as Julia Harper, the wife of Jack Harper doesn't bring the characters well. I couldn't feel the chemistry between her and Jack. Well, Morgan Freeman and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau have a little role but quite important, so does Melissa Leo as Sally. They are doing great jobs eventhough they just appear in a short time.
“Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the Gate:
‘To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his God?’”
- Horatius, The Lays of Ancient Rome -
a brief conclusion
Truthfully, I like how the movie is surely leading you to the next question for discussing with others. Some scenes are unpredictable and predictable. It's nice that you want to discuss more after the movie ended. It means the plot was well-presented. The effects-created world and some real technology supplies are so entertaining. A great sci-fi movie yet entertaining. Recommended to watch in IMAX theatre.
